Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark – Birmingham, AL
The blast furnaces that once produced iron will soon become an exciting new visitor destination for the City of Birmingham. Sloss Furnaces, a National Historic Landmark and the only such entity of its kind in the world, is undertaking a renovation to improve educational resources, stabilize on-site historic structures, and constructed a Visitor Center.
Visitors will be immersed in the sounds, smells, and actions of making pig iron. They will literally feel the heat of the blast furnace, hear the rich legacies of those who once worked in the plant, realize the importance and danger of their work, and leave with a sense of pride about Birmingham’s past.
